Frequently Asked Questions

General

Is my phone compatible?
In order to be compatible with the M1 Stereo Speakers, your phone must have Bluetooth and support the A2DP profile. Check your phone's manual to see if it supports the Bluetooth A2DP profile.

In order for your computer to be compatible with the M1 Stereo Speaker, it must have either an internal Bluetooth adaptor or an external Bluetooth adaptor such as a USB dongle, an appropriate driver that supports A2DP. Check with either your computer manufacturer or the manufacturer of your Bluetooth adaptor to ensure you have the correct driver.

Alternatively, you can use the 3.5mm Stereo input on the back of the M1 Stereo Speakers to connect to the headphone socket of your computer, phone, or MP3 player.

I am prompted for a passcode/passkey during pairing. What is the code?
The passcode is "0000"(four zeros).
Do I need to pair the devices every time I use them together?
No. The pairing process is required only once for each phone. You will only need to pair the devices again if you delete the pairing information from your phone.
What is included in the M1 package?
Included in the box is the BlueAnt M1 Stereo Speakers, an AC charger, a 3.5mm stereo jack cable, a protective carry case, a User Manual and a Warranty Card.
How do the M1 Stereo Speakers use Bluetooth technology?
Bluetooth is used to send high quality stereo audio over radio waves between your Bluetooth device and the M1 speakers.
Can I use the M1 Stereo Speakers to make and receive calls with my mobile phone?
No. The M1 Stereo Speakers can not be used as a Handsfree unit for your phone.
How many devices can I pair to the M1?
The M1 can store pairing information for up to 8 different phones or Bluetooth devices. Please note that the M1 can only connect to one Bluetooth device at a time.
When should I charge my M1 Stereo Speakers?
When the LED indicator goes red the battery is low and you should charge your M1.

The battery will last for about 1500 hrs on standby and much longer if the M1 is switched off in between uses.

Can I use my M1 with my computer for VOIP applications?
No. The M1 Stereo Speakers cannot be used for VOIP.
Is the Firmware upgradeable on the M1?
No. The firmware is not upgradeable on the M1.
Can I use the M1 speakers with my iPhone?
Yes. If you have the original iPhone or iPhone 3G then you will need to update the software on your iPhone to version 3.0, as this software update added A2DP music streaming to the iPhone. Visit the iPhone software update website for more information.

The iPhone 3GS includes support for A2DP streaming as standard, and will therefore work with the BlueAnt M1.

Can I use a Bluetooth adaptor for my iPod to stream music to the M1 Stereo Speakers?
Yes, as long as the adaptor uses the "0000" passcode and supports the Bluetooth A2DP profile.
Can I use the M1 Stereo Speakers with my TV, DVD player, Xbox or PS3?
Yes. However, you may need to purchase a cable/adaptor to enable these devices to be plugged into the standard 3.5mm stereo jack in the back of the M1 Stereo Speakers.
Why does the Bass Boost only work at lower volume settings?
This is to ensure that the audio does not distort at higher volumes.
Am I able to use the different equaliser settings on my computer, phone or iPod to enhance the sound quality?
Yes. It is good to experiment with different equalizer settings depending on personal preferences and the type of music being played.
Why do some MP3s downloaded from the web have poor audio quality?
The MP3 format uses high compression and a low bit rate to achieve smaller file sizes and is far from being true CD quality. If you have downloaded your MP3s from the internet, then these files may have been made low quality to save space and speed up downloading.

If you are converting your own songs to MP3 from CDs, ensure you use high quality settings encoding the files at 192kbs or higher (or use a lossless setting if your software supports this option). While the resulting file size will be bigger, the quality and crispness of the music will be noticeably improved.

Bluetooth

What is Bluetooth Wireless Technology?
Bluetooth Wireless Technology is a short-range communications technology using encryption for high security data/voice transmission.
Is it safe to use Bluetooth devices? I have heard they can allow connections to my phone?
For Bluetooth security reasons, once you have set up your Bluetooth devices we recommend setting the visibility option in the Bluetooth menu of your phone to off so that other Bluetooth users cannot see the your phone.

This advice only applies to a few mainly older Bluetooth-enabled phones. Most new phones have better security.

Can somebody else take control of my BlueAnt device if they are in range?
No, your BlueAnt device can only connect to previously paired devices that have been authenticated. The pairing procedure generates an encrypted key that is known only to the two paired devices.
What is the difference between the Handsfree and Headset Bluetooth Profiles?
The Handsfree and Headset Profiles are specifications for communication between Bluetooth devices.

The Handsfree Profile is the one more commonly used to allow mobile phones to communicate with Bluetooth headsets and car kits. The Handsfree Profile provides the ability to carry out basic functions such as answering, rejecting and ending calls, and adjusting the call audio volume, as well as more advanced features like using the phone's voice dial functionality.

The Headset Profile is a more basic profile. It provides the ability to carry out basic functions such as answering, rejecting and ending calls, as well as adjusting the call audio volume.

How do I know if my devices are connected?
When Bluetooth is turned on, your phone will display a Bluetooth symbol on the main screen. When your phone is connected to a Bluetooth device, this symbol will change slightly to indicate that this is the case. Some phones show a headset or a car symbol to notify you that they are connected to a Bluetooth device.
How far can my mobile phone be from my BlueAnt device and still remain connected?
Your BlueAnt device will remain connected within a range of 10 metres (30 feet), although please note that the sound quality may start to deteriorate when your phone is more than about 7 metres (23 feet) away from the headset, depending on your environment.
Can other electrical devices cause interference with Bluetooth?
Bluetooth technology employs a technique called frequency hopping. This means that Bluetooth devices constantly change the frequency at which they send data, reducing interference with wireless devices like wireless LANs and cordless landline phones.

Noise Interference can occur if the Bluetooth device is used in close proximity with a microwave. If you are experiencing problems with your BlueAnt device, check if there are any such devices in the surroundings, and if so keep the distance between the microwave and your BlueAnt device to at least 5 to 10 metres.

Any interference will usually only cause a slight crackling sound. The frequency of Bluetooth is much higher than that of radio station bands.

If I cup my hand over a Bluetooth device the signal strength and quality suffers. Why does this happen?
Bluetooth signals are radio waves and so do not need "line of sight" to operate. However, radio waves cannot travel through water and as the human body is made up of mostly water they cannot travel through it. Therefore, your hand will create a barrier causing slight interference and a loss of signal quality.

Troubleshooting

How do I reconnect my M1 Stereo Speakers?
To reconnect to your phone, press the Play/Pause button once.
Why won't my M1 Stereo Speakers go into pairing mode?
To put the M1 into pairing mode, do the following:

From off, hold the on/off button for 5 seconds until the light flashes red and blue.

The M1 Stereo Speakers sometime require a few seconds to establish a connection, so please be patient.

Why is the sound on my M1 noisy and distorted?
You may have the volume too high. Turn the volume down on your BlueAnt device to a level that does not give echo or feedback. You should also turn the volume down on your phone.

This issue can also be caused by a low battery, so you should charge your M1 Stereo Speakers and see if this resolves the problem.

Why can't I hear any sound from the Speaker?
The phone's memory may have become corrupt. This can be fixed by rebooting the phone (turn your phone off and remove the battery for a few seconds, then replace the battery and turn it back on again). If this does not resolve the issue, delete the pairing information for your BlueAnt device and pair it with your phone again.
My BlueAnt device worked great but now it won't connect. What can I do?
As newer phones are like small computers, they may become corrupt over time and you may need to reset them every so often.

Simply turn your phone off and remove the battery for a few seconds, then replace the battery and turn it back on again.

If this does not resolve the issue, delete the pairing information for your BlueAnt device and pair it with your phone again.

Why does my phone's battery not last as long as it used to?
When you switch Bluetooth on, your phone searches for Bluetooth devices in the area. This will use more battery power than without Bluetooth on. Your BlueAnt device has a standby mode it enters when connected to your phone so that it minimises battery loss. This allows your BlueAnt device to have such outstanding battery life as well as reducing the power required by the phone.
My phone says "Bluetooth Module not found". What can I do?
This means that your phone cannot find its internal Bluetooth chip for some reason. Restarting your phone should fix this problem. If not please contact your phone manufacturer for assistance.
